ASHTANGA YOGA taught according to Sri K. Patthabi Jois is a physically demanding yoga practice where the movement is synchronized with deep and calm breathing. Each of the 62 poses in the Primary Series is logically built upon each other, preparing and opening the body and mind for the next pose in the series – one of the most intelligent and wholesome practice systems. The continuous practice of Ashtanga yoga purifies, strengthens and beautifully shapes the body, calms the mind, cultivates a strong and confident self, and enhances the overall well-being. The continuous flow of movements with synchronized Ujjayi breathing, correctly pointed Drishti (gaze), engaging the Bandhas (physical power centers/locks, i.e. Mula = root/pelvic floor, Uddiyana = below the navel, Jalandhara = throat), integrity in alignment, discipline, stamina and grace in moving through the postures of the series are keys to the benefits of the Ashtanga Yoga practice.
ASHTANGA HALF PRIMARY SERIES (Level 1)
Introduction to the first asanas of the Primary Series with modified sequences, tailored to the beginner. Emphasis on Ujjayi breathing - synchronising the breath with the movement, building core strength, enhancing balance, concentration and flexibility, focus on alignment in the postures, understanding the body mechanics (in order to practice safely). Individual hands-on adjustments are given along with an intro to Pranayama (breathing technique) and chanting.
ASHTANGA FULL PRIMARY SERIES (Level 2/3)
Full Primary Series led class, tailored for yoga students who are familiar with the majority of the poses of the Primary Series. Exploring the more challenging postures, enhancing core strength, balance and flexibility, focusing on the steady and smooth flow of Ujjayi breathing, graceful movements, proper alignment and fine-tuning the execution of the asanas. With individual hands-on adjustments to deepen the practice, incorporating Pranayama, meditation and chanting.
TRADITIONAL ASHTANGA MYSORE STYLE (all Levels)
Every student practices silently the series according to his/her own pace. Individual adjustments and insights are given by the instructor. For students familiar to the various sequences of Ashtanga yoga.
ASHTANGA INTERMEDIATE SERIES (Level 2/3)
Intro to Intermediate Series (2nd Series) tailored for yoga students who have practiced the full Primary Series for some time. Exploring backbends and other research asanas to strengthen and opening the back, to further open the range of motion of hips and shoulders, more advanced inversions and arm balances.
ASHTANGA IMPROVISATION TIM MILLER STYLE (all Levels)
According to Tim Miller's tradition Thursday is the day students get to request an Ashtanga pose they wish to work on and practice more in-depth with research poses. The teacher composes the class according to the student's requests; a fun and playful class that may lead you beyond your comfort zone as we cultivate body and mind by reaching further into the practice and approach new poses.
Although we may reach beyond the comfort zone, we shall stay within our safety zone; modifications and other options of the poses are always available. Workshop style class with deeper explanations and insights about Asanas and the Practice.
